BeaconOne Healthcare Partners is pleased to recognize the recent ID week presentation developed in collaboration with external clinicians and members of our client’s team. We performed a systematic literature review (SLR) and meta-analysis (MA) titled Comparison of Target Detection Rates of Multiplex Gastrointestinal PCR Panels. The research examines the relative detection frequency of targets included in broad 15- and 22-target (15t and 22t) multiplex gastrointestinal panels and discusses the diagnostic uncertainty and potential overtreatment associated with these panels given the identification of non-etiologic or colonizing organisms. Our results document an unmet need that could be addressed by leveraging a more step-wise diagnostic approach that although results in a lower detection frequency, is offset by reducing identification of organisms of questionable clinical significance, such as C. difficile or non-pathogenic E. coli. The findings of this analysis suggest the potential value of a targeted 11t midplex panel that preserves a clinically meaningful diagnostic yield, while reducing unnecessary co-detections. These findings align with IDSA & AMP/ASM recommendations favoring focused multiplex testing to improve diagnostic stewardship, reduce overtreatment, and lower healthcare costs.
